A fairly quiet day but those who came made me blush with their compliments. Although the sun surprisingly was out, it just got greyer and windier and finally mid afternoon the rain came down!
One of the more interesting conversations I had was with a woman originally from France. When she first saw Emily Carr’s paintings she didn’t like them, finding them dark and spooky. It wasn’t until a trip to Haida Gwaii that she understood and came to appreciate Emily’s paintings of huge trees of greens and browns. I found it interesting that it was this woman’s experience in the natural world that changed her opinion about Emily’s paintings.
I was never enamoured with Emily Carr’s paintings but with exposure to the originals and to the environment Emily painted, I have come to appreciate them. Interestingly, I have just learnt that her work will be presented at the prestigious dOCUMENTA in Kassel, Germany.
What do you think about Emily Carr’s work?
