Daily Painting – one last one from La Manzanilla

I’m back in Victoria, Canada, and slowly slowly settling back into the groove of the north. Wonderfully, the sun shone down this past Easter weekend and Cam and I spent much of Monday in the garden. It’s just beautiful right now, with flowers and leaves bursting forth, all awakening. Next time I’ll have a photo.

Daily Painting

Here is my last daily painting from La Manzanilla. I was drawn to the design the peppers made, particularly the shadows created by their stems. It took me awhile to arrange them to their best advantage!

1. The initial drawing
1. The initial charcoal drawing on Wallis paper (with a watercolour wash)

2. The first bits of pastel laid in
2. The first bits of pastel laid in – peppers and their shadows

3. All parts of the painting are indicated.
3. All parts of the painting are now indicated. Now it’s time to fine tune and tweak

4. Secondary pastel layers are on and the highlights have been indicated (my favourite part!)

5. Over The Edge, 5.5 x 5.5 inches, pastel
5. The final daily painting. Over The Edge, 5.5 x 5.5 inches, pastel. Near the end, I felt that the plate should be warmer so I added a yellowish layer. I also added some red to the lower pepper to connect it visually to the other peppers. And then it was done!

 The Wonder of Kids

A couple of days before leaving La Manz, I had the opportunity to give a pastel class to June Nery’s son Lyle. (June is my web designer and also hosts a cool website about La Manzanilla.) As well as looking at a few pastel pieces from the Musee D’Orsay and some major works from the Louvre (June, husband Rick, and Lyle head to Europe in September so thought this a great intro!), we experimented with the qualities of soft pastel and the possibilities created by layering. It was a fun session for me, both to see Lyle work and also to see where his mind and curiosity took him. I meant to take photos through my class time with him but I got into what we were doing and totally forgot. So I asked June if she’d take a photo of Lyle with some of the exercises we did and here it is:

6. Lyle with pastel exercises
6. Lyle with pastel exercises. Lyle chose four different colours of watercolours which we painted in four different rectangles on watercolour paper. Once dry, we then layered pastels (four colours again chosen by Lyle) over each painted colour. What a difference the background hue makes to the final colour and mood!

Thanks for stopping by. I certainly love receiving your comments. Keep ’em coming!

Saludos!
