Michael Weeps

When George Floyd was killed on 25 May 2020 by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, I was moved to create art that reflected my stormy emotions. I discovered that St Michael was the patron saint of police officers and that got me thinking… What would Michael be feeling about what happened? And I guessed he’d be weeping. And so I began a painting journey exploring this idea. This painting is the first in the series.

Past Meets Present

Gallery Goer series

I was caught by the way the viewer and the subject of the painting connected – they could be distant relatives! To emphasize that, I chose to use the red from the painting as the dominant colour, bringing it into the clothing and hair of the viewer, thereby visually connecting both men. The original painting, “Portrait of Philip Livingston,“ is by Pompeo Batoni and is located in the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, Salt Lake City.

Brown's Island

Painted on location

An idyllic summer’s day by the Big Rideau Lake in Ontario, Canada. There’s nothing quite so delightful as sitting in the shade by the water, listening to waves lap against the bank as I painted.

Truckin' Along

Dog Walker series

One of the many distractions from painting is watching the world go by from my studio window. Dog walkers are a main source of amusement and often turn up as subject matter in my paintings. I love the jauntiness of this dog and his companion.

All Eyes

Blurred Boundaries series

This was the 6th in a series of paintings where I was playing with how much I could break through the boundaries, the contour lines, of a figure. In this one I also played with luscious colours!
