Dum Vivimus Vivamus – Art Project revealed!

Dum vivimus vivamus – While we live, let’s LIVE!

I first heard this meaningful latin phrase used by Patrizio, an inspiring artist I met in La Manzanilla, Mexico this winter. When my friend Andrea came down to visit, we took in an art exhibition entitled “Vivir” which is the Spanish word for “to live”. Appropriately, it included a piece by Patrizio called Dum Vivimus Vivamus. Each letter of the phrase had been painted on a block of wood. The artwork was arresting in its simplicity and powerful in its statement.

Fast forward five months. I’m visiting Andrea on Salt Spring Island for a couple of days. Days before I arrive she comes up with the brilliant idea of doing something similar to Patrizio’s piece in collage. She gets to work immediately and sends me this fabulous image!

Andrea's initial cutouts for Dum Vivimus Vivamus art project - ready for wood blocks

When I get to her house, a pile of 3″ x 3″ wooden blocks await. They need to be sanded and then sealed with a mixture of water and white glue.

Here I am sanding blocks for the art project - lots of vibration!

Andrea sealing her set of wood blocks

After all that work we have to eat 🙂

Grilled Arctic Char with quinoa and glazed carrots all using different Monsoon Coast spices - absolutely scrumptious!!

Now it’s time to get stuck in. Since I am behind in the cutting up images department I think, what the heck, and decide to paint the blocks and then collage the letters.

Andrea well ahead with six blocks done

Me just working on first block - not having a clue what to do really

We work for hours! Of course we again need nourishment and dine and drink in style.

Delicious Daiquiri Especial (yeah yeah, I can hear your comments about this photo)

Grilled Thai Beef Salad - a sensuous mix of flavours - hot, sweet, sour, salty - YUM!

After eating, we work into the night.

Working very late.....wine for sustenance...

The next morning we keep going….

As you can see, we take over Andrea's kitchen table for this project

Mixing paint for the last blocks

Andrea finishes hers…..

Andrea's Dum Vivimus Vivamus completed!

……as I am still choosing letters – not as easy as you might think!

Blocks all painted but I still have the challenge of choosing the specific letters

In the end, I have to finish the last three blocks at home and here they are at last.

Dum Vivimus Vivamus finished!!!

The whole project was immense fun. Thanks to Andrea for the idea, for cutting up all those letters (you can see the piles in my last blog), for providing the wood blocks, AND for all the amazing cooking. Check out her delicious Monsoon Coast recipes!

And thanks to Patrizio for inspiring us. Dum Vivimus Vivamus – words to live by!

    1. Thanks 🙂

And yeah, doesn’t the v sound strange as a w? Kinda wussy. I am not sure I can change my pronunciation to the correct way!

I was searching for images of dum vivimus vivamus online to use as inspiration for a picture that I had in mind and came across this. I absolutely love it. If you ever find yourself not having anywhere to store these Gail please send them my way I would love to give them a home. Awesome!

    1. Scott aren’t you sweet 🙂 I’m so glad you found my blog post.
So glad you like my interpretation. It’s such a fantastic phrase is it not?
I would love to see what your picture looks like when it’s done!
