Daily Painting in La Manzanilla – the second one

Daily Painting

I can hardly believe I’ve been here in La Manzanilla, Mexico just over a week. Time does fly. I’ve been pastelling and have another daily painting to show you.

I do like the eyeglasses as a subject (see my previous blog).  I changed the surface on which they rested as well as their angle and their accompaniment. They are challenging for sure but such interesting colours appear as light comes through the plastic rims and also reflects on the, the bits that hang on your ears (what are those things called??).

And here’s the progression of that daily painting:

1. The charcoal drawing on Wallis paper
1. The charcoal drawing on Wallis paper that’s been painted with watercolour

2. The first layers of pastel go on the daily painting
2. Here I’ve started applying the first layers of pastel. The three main values are the dark of the eyeglasses and the shadow beneath the tangerine, the middle value of the lower half of the tangerine, and the lights of the surface on which the glasses sit as well as all the highlights.

3. The previous image in black and white
3. I wanted to show you the image above in black and white. It reveals what I discovered as I was going along, that the shadow beneath the tangerine was not as dark as it needed to be. If you have a camera that shoots black and white, this is a great method to keep checking your values as you proceed.

4. Daily painting progresses
4. And so I adjust the shadow below the tangerine, covering some of the lighter yellows with the deepness of blue which also acts as a nice compliment to the orange above. I also darken all the shadows including the tangerine skin itself. As I work, the sun moves (no way of putting it on pause!) and the shadows change but I stick to the shadows I have drawn in from the beginning.

5. The daily painting finished
5. And here’s the final daily painting. I worked up the details on the tangerine and added all those sparkly highlights everywhere.

6. The finished daily painting as seen in black and white
6. And just for fun, here’s the daily painting as seen in black and white. You can see clearly the changes I made from the beginnings of the pastel.

I came across this quote and thought it was oh so perfect:

I feel as though I haven’t seen an object until I actually start painting it.  ~ Janet Fish

Acrylic Class Begins

I am teaching an acrylic class here in La Manzanilla. At first I didn’t have enough people to make it work but all of a sudden in the last few days, people began signing up! It’s being held in two parts, yesterday and Monday, from 9am to noon. We are lucky enough to be hosted in Mary Jo’s house, out on her patio overlooking the village of La Manz. It’s a view that’s very distracting! But we eventually got down to business. Here’s the group hard at work on an exercise of layering transparent paint.

They are so keen, ready to absorb all I have to offer, which is such a joy.

And here’s the gorgeous view!

You know I love to hear from you so if you feel inclined, please feel free to leave a comment whether about the painting, the process, the class or the beautiful view of La Manzanilla!

Until next time……

Loved your bright colours. Looks like a piece of Mexico. A lovely picture of your students at work, must be a painting there!

  2. enjoyed the glasses paintings and how they developed more or less in line with the quotation given the view is gorgeous
