Daily Painting in La Manzanilla – eyeglasses continued

Daily Painting

So I’m on my third daily painting of eyeglasses. (You can see the first one here and the second one here.) I guess a book was going to be the obvious accompaniment eventually and so sure enough, that’s what’s here – the book I’m reading at the moment, The Madonnas of Leningrad. I have to say, this daily painting was a challenge!!! Eyeglasses and an upside-down book. What was I thinking??

I got started and got so into what I was doing that I only remembered to take one more photo before the final so here are the three:

Charcoal drawing on Wallis paper
1. The charcoal drawing on Wallis paper. You can see, it’s a bit sketchy.

The pastel well underway
2. I’m well into the pastel. Now I just need to sharpen up some edges and add the details and highlights.

The final pastel
3. And here’s the final daily painting – 6 x 6 inches. I’m pleased with it as this was a toughy!! As I was finishing up, the light changed (yup, that moving sun again) and a beautiful yet subtle reflection of the turquoise colour of the surface on which the book lay appeared in the glasses. Those were the last strokes applied.

Pastel used for daily painting
4. Here are the rather dirty pastels used for the daily painting.

The second of two acrylic classes

Class started on Saturday and we got going again Monday morning. We quickly reviewed what we’d covered Saturday, painted exercises of veils and tints, then set up some vegetables to work from. I talked about the three-value thumbnails that I always (almost always) start with, showing them examples and they then dove in, making their own three-value sketches.

Finally, they could get to work on a canvas portraying a vegetable or two using the techniques we’d covered the previous five hours of class. We went overtime and even so, really, they had so little time to paint. Nevertheless, I was really pleased with what they produced and hope they were too.

Here they are, hard at work, the beautiful view all but forgotten (see my previous blog).

Tonight in La Manzanilla

I wandered down to the sea after an invitation to join folks on the beach for some grilled freshly caught tuna. Wow! Was it ever good….and the tequila to sip with it wasn’t too bad either. 🙂

Beach sitters ready for the sunset
Here’s some of the beach sitters including my La Manzanilla neighbours Judith, George, and Gayle. (Sorry it’s out of focus….gives you a sense of the fun we were having anyway. My iPhone just isn’t as good as my camera which I am getting out of the habit of carrying. No more!)

The sunset in La Manzanilla
And this is what we were watching….the sun setting, glorious despite a cloudy evening.

It’s all these times that makes one intensely happy to be alive.

PS. Here’s the Amazon link to the book, The Madonnas of Leningrad. I’m about a third into it and enjoying it more as I go. The descriptions of the artwork and the Hermitage itself are just wonderful!

  3. Dear Gail:
Was on the internet this morning searching for something else and found the lovely pastel you did of eyeglasses resting on a copy of my novel, The Madonnas of Leningrad. Well done!!! and with subject matter that one wouldn’t necessarily expect much of. Hope you don’t mind, I posted it to my Facebook page (with credit, of course).
