Well, you might have wondered where I’d gotten to (or not).
Here’s the scoop. After much deliberation, I decided to purchase an iMac to supplement my laptop which is bursting at its seams. Sooooo excited. I thought, I’ll be able to edit my next video on it – large screen and much memory will be a nice change. So I waited for it to arrive. It finally turned up on my doorstep about a week ago.
I unpacked it after a couple of days and, when I had some time, I got down to the task of editing. Hmmmm….wouldn’t you know it. New computer means updated programmes means damn, new learning curve. So what would normally take me two to three hours took me pretty much a day – a day of frustration, tears, gnashing of teeth, some choice words, eventually a lot of googling (thank heavens for google!) to figure things out, and finally, some editing. Great. Then I still had the voice over to do. Which I did yesterday. And then I had so many problems uploading the video to YouTube. Why? Haven’t a clue. Just did. Finally, after midnight and after five tries, I was successful!! And now here I am writing a blog post about my trials and tribulations 🙂
Computers. Don’t you just love them????
Okay, so here it is. Click on the picture of me and check out my pastel demo. Please let me know if all my chatter about negative space made sense to you. I’d love to know!!
And because some people want to know what I’m painting, here’s a photo of the holly:

And the final piece:

Please let me know if you are interested in purchasing this pastel. Its pre-gallery price is $100.
I look forward to hearing what you think of the video. You can always comment under the video itself or send me a reply and I will add your comment to the blog (just let me know if I may do that). Or comment directly on the blog.
Until next time!

Thanks , Gail for the holly demo about painting negative space .
This video really makes one think about how to see what we are painting in shapes first.Painting with a limited pallet helps one think about color theory ,values and the ability to mix colors in pastel right on the ground.
I plan to try the same principles in a small painting today and I will send in to you.
It is so generous of you to do these videos ,you are a great teacher.
Sandi, thanks so much for your lovely comment. I would love to see the painting you did following these ideas. As you say, using a limited palette forces one to think about values and seeing, and using negative space certainly helps with seeing shapes rather than objects, something that is always a struggle!
Very well done !!! There are a lot of finicky places to use pastels in this piece. How do you use a blunt pastel and get into all these tight spots..???
Perhaps everyone knows but could you tell me ..?
Thanks,
Me
Thanks! About the blunt pastel…weeeell, it has tiny pointy bits and some edges. The trick is to find them and use them!
Gail, love the demo, like you showed a picture of the live setup!
Would you tell me how you frame a finished piece? Do you use a fixative, if yes, which one? Do you spacers between mat and painting?
My pastels flake off, but I don’t have good pastels yet, still using Faber Castel soft which are student quality.
Could this be the issue. I have some rembrandt ordered, and Sennelier, and Richeson to come, will that solve the problem?
I appreciate your feedback and advise!
